Retailer SPAR has announced a new partnership with Uber Eats to expand its 2U online delivery service.

In a similar vein to Pick n Pay’s partnership with Mr D, SPAR and Tops at SPAR items will now be available on the Uber Eats service for deliver.

The group said this will give customers more ways to shop for SPAR products online.

Upon launch, 2U delivered by Uber Eats will be available in select locations, reaching 150 SPAR, Tops at SPAR, and KWIKSPAR stores by the end of July.

The group aims to grow this access to 400 stores nationwide by year-end. With 52,000 Uber Eats drivers across 40 towns and cities, the room for expansion is vast, it said.

The collaboration initially focuses on groceries and liquor, but the group said it has plans to expand into SPAR Pharmacy and Build it deliveries in the future.

“By partnering with Uber Eats, we aim to provide our customers with greater convenience, value and speed, while maintaining the quality, affordability of daily deals,” said Blake Raubenheimer, Omnichannel Executive at The SPAR Group.

“Internationally, studies have shown that consumers place a premium on service and availability, with 79% of online shoppers expecting all in-store items to be available for pick-up and delivery.”

“We’re benchmarking our service delivery channels against this standard while seamlessly extending our loyalty programmes across all channels,” said Raubenheimer.

The move from SPAR echoes the strategy applied by Pick n Pay when it partnered with Mr D for its deliveries in 2022.

The partnership has proved to be a great success for the group amid its wider retail turnaround.

In its latest results, Pick n Pay’s Online business, primarily Asap and PnP groceries on the Mr D app, continued to perform well.

Online retail sales for the 53 weeks ended 2 March 2025 grew 48.7% year-on-year, with on-demand growing at 60%. Due to scale gains, its online business is now profitable on a fully costed basis.
