New R1 billion shopping mall opening in South Africa this month
Groot Phesantekraal View, a new shopping centre in northern Cape Town, will open later this month.
The new development by Abland has received an investment of close to R1 billion and is set to open on 24 July 2025.
The 30,000 sqm mall will be located in Durbanville. Despite being one of the oldest towns in the Western Cape, the area is seeing significant investment.
Developers have picked up on the growing demand in the area, with a flurry of new residential developments attracting keen investor potential.
Other groups and services have also embraced the trend. Notably, the area will soon be home to a new private university, with the STADIO Durbanville campus well into development.
The campus is on track to open for new students in 2026, with its phased development progressing faster than planned.
Groot Phesantekraal View is designed to cater to the expanding needs of Durbanville’s residents, while improving the area’s appeal as a desirable place to live.
Durbanville’s historical roots trace back to the late 17th century, and it is one of the oldest wine-producing regions in Cape Town.
The area has evolved from a rural farming area into a thriving suburban enclave, yet it has retained much of its charm and cultural significance.
With its blend of picturesque wine estates and modern amenities, it has become one of the go-to areas in the Cape Town metro area.
The new mall will be found at the intersection of Okavango Road and Klipheuwel Road, combining retail, dining, and leisure. The fully-let mall will feature the following tenants:
- Checkers
- Checkers Liquor
- Checkers Outdoor
- Super Spar
- Tops
- Woolworths
- Dischem
- Clicks
- Mr Price
- Mr Price Home
- Mr Price Sport
- Ackerman
- De Jagers
- Pep
- Pep Home
- Pick n Pay Clothing
- Crazy Plastics
- Crazy Pets
- Uniq
- Dave Sheer Cape
- Planet Fitness
- PNA
- Bossa
- Boote Leggers
- McDonalds
The new mall marks yet another development opportunity identified by Abland, which also targets the growing population of the Fourways area.
The Lion Pride Shopping Centre opened in northern Johannesburg, one of the city’s fastest-growing areas, on 26 June 2025. It hopes to bring convenience to this area of the nation’s richest city.
“Lion Pride Shopping Centre is a focal point for a thriving community,” said Grant Silverman, Director at Abland Property Developers.
“This node is undergoing tremendous transformation, and we saw the opportunity to create a centre that responds directly to the needs of local families and professionals.”
With many now being priced out of central areas within cities, many are forced to move to the outskirts, presenting opportunities for housing and retail developers.
